The words that comes to my mind which best describes this place is – “ Blank canvas which is waiting for you to fill colours with your unique experiences”. Tabo can be described feebly but experienced deeply within. Located at 10,760 ft. This region is enveloped with the Spiti Mountains and traversed by Spiti River originating in Tibet region.

Tabo has been an important Buddhist and spiritual energy. Tabo is famous for the Tabo monastery , Tabo Caves and the nearby Dhankar Monastery (which also comes enroute Tabo-Kaza) .

Do book the Mountain view rooms.

Spread your Itinery into minimum 2 days at Tabo both for acclimatization as well as to immerse into the inner silence within you. Day 1 visit the Tabo Monastery . The old monastery which is like the 1000 year old Ajanta monasteries opens at 9.30 am . There are prayers and chanting’s early morning from 6.30-7.30 am by the Buddhist monks, however locals are not allowed into the temple at these hours .  There is a beautiful road behind the Tabo Monastery going through the Tabo village with attractive Houses with the Buddhist strings and mantras ..this road will lead you through a few Steps around (200) , 20 Minutes to reach the Tabo caves which are on the hills . The new monastery had recently witnessed few thefts and unfortunately was found locked at most hours. However just remain in this site to just hear the noises of the high altitude winds, with the ringing bells sounds. 

The Tabo caves is easily accessible via some uphill steps . Those who have been to the Ajanta caves will be reminded of it ! There is nothing much inside these caves , but this was a place for meditation and stillness by buddhist monks….so do spend a few moments to witness your true nature !

At Tabo and many places in Spiti hills , you will be accompanied by a dog ! Its a wonder how one of the flock of few dogs will search you all the ay and find you at your lost roads and will guide you to your path. I found one at Tabo and another one later at Pin Valley (Mudh Village). 

Evening go around the Tabo Shopping centre all of these are within 1-2 kms and best covered by walks.

I saw two travellers who have been walking while I was doing the village walks ! Amazing and felt so happy and motivated ! Tabo has a Helipad and a Tribal culture preservation School and a Government school along with a centre for linguistic preservation managed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
